Maryland Facility, Rust Belt Riders Among Awardees Being Recognized at USCC's COMPOST2020

Raleigh, NC (Jan. 2, 2020) - Prince George's County's Composting Facility and Ohio's Rust Belt Riders join programs in New York and compost experts in Oregon and Colorado who will be honored by the US Composting Council at the organization's annual Awards Ceremony this month in Charleston, SC.

Awardees are nominated by peers and honored each year at the US Composting Council's Annual Conference and Tradeshow. This year's program will be held at the North Charleston Convention Center on January 30.

The Composter of the Year-Small Scale award is going to Rust Belt Riders, which begin in 2014 on bike-powered routes that grew to a fleet of four trucks hauling more than 200,000 lbs of food scrap per month from 160 locations in the Cleveland region. Since 2018, Rust Belt Riders has been processing 35,000 lbs of material monthly on a 500-square-foot permitted area. They were vocal an advocating for the advancement of state-wide rules change that support community composting efforts. These rules change allowed for Rust Belt Riders to produce more compost on community-based sites and birth a new arm of their orgnaization, Tilth Soil.

In 2019, Rust Belt Riders launched a line of premium soils under the brand Tilth Soil which are tailored to serve professional growers, home gardeners, and specialty crop cultivators. Tilth Soil has a specific focus on soil biology, they produce “living soil” - these are soils formulated specifically to support nutrient cycling, seed germination, root development, and improved plant health over time.
